My cat has slight hair loss on her ear (outside).?

Is this a result of basic scratching or is this a problem I should look into. The rest of the kitty looks fine, but the ears are starting to look half pink (skin) and half black (fur).

She doesn't scratch her ears often so I don't think it's a mite or fleas. Please help!

She could have an infection-ringworm is common. Another possibility is anxiety related overgrooming. See the vet.

My cat never scratched much, but she did scratch occassionally, and had noticeable hairloss on her ears even though her scratching was fairly uncommon -- when she went at it, she went at it. She also did not have mites or an infection, she actually has some kind of food allergy. I would recommend a vet visit to check into it -- the ear hair shouldn't be coming off like that. If she has an itchy issue, she will thank you for resolving it! Good luck!

My cat lost some hair on his ears a couple of years ago due to ringworm--there's usually one or more tell-tale round patches of skin, but have it checked either way. BUT here's the weird thing: we cleared that up long ago, but now his ears are bald. No more ringworm (we checked), and no scratching. I found this website that says this is not uncommon in Siamese cats (my cat is not Siamese):

I found this to be reassuring, since it says there are no complications with this condition and that it clears up by itself eventually. Good luck! Definitely check with a vet, though!
