Is this pink eye?

My cousin's left eye randomly just swelled up today. He says it doesn't hurt though, but he can't open it. It's basically swollen shut. He says it's red on the inside. And under his eye, it's bumpy. Further down, under the outside corner of his eye, it looks like red bumps.

He said he thinks one of his hair follicles got in there, but I just don't see that as the reason.

My aunt thinks it's an allergy, but I doubt it. This hasn't happened before!

What could this be? Please help!

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like a Stye or the real word for it is Chalazion.

They can at times be very painful, red, and sometimes even produce discharge. They are normally either along the eye lash line, or under the upper or lower lid. They do normally make the entire lid swell for the first day or so. The only way to treat them is to use warm wet compresses excessively. We recommends to patients to use them for 5 min every 1-2 hrs for the first day or so. But in order for it to go away you must use the warm compresses until its fully gone- Which can take up to 2 weeks. The other option is to get it drained by the doctor, which involves blades and needles. Most people want to avoid that, including me!

There are drops that an ophthalmologist can give you, but 80% of the time they dont work, its mainly the warm moist compresses that do it.

Good luck! They are one of the most annoying things to have to deal with!

Allergy would prob make both eyes do this. It could be pink eye. In either case, needs medication to correct is, quick trip to the ER would suffice I am sure.

Sounds like an allergy. One of the most common symptoms is discomfort in the eye. A child may say that it feels like there's sand in the eye. Many kids have redness of the eye and inner eyelid. It can also cause discharge from the eyes, which may cause the eyelids to stick together when the child awakens in the morning. Some kids have swollen eyelids or sensitivity to bright light.

It could be an allergic reaction to some kind of bug bite. Does it itch? Does it feel dry and scratchy? Pink eye does not cause the eye to swell shut. My advice would be to see a doctor because certain things can cause blindness pretty quickly and that isn't something you want to play around with.
