Hair Ball....Or something else?

Hi There.

My cat coughs like crazy two to three times a day. It's a raspy cough and has been going on for almost a month. Nothing has ever come up.

She has no fever, and her gums are pink as usual (our other darling kitty died two months ago from kidney failure : ( and his gums were white). Her appetite is normal.

I live in Thailand, and value (greatly) your advice before I make the trip to the vet's office as I don't speak Thai very well.

Oh- and she is an inside cat until we move out of python territory and back to Canada.

I may be overracting because of the loss of our dear little cat Felix in December. All this coughing seems a bit strange though.

Any advice on coughing cats? I have heard so much about hairballs, but have yet to see one.

Thanks for any help. Meow.

ps. interesting: the Thai word for 'cat' is pronounced 'meow'.

as a vet tech at my work i will tell you that your should change the diet of your cat.. but i think u should take yhour kitty in and have it checked out =]

good luck

Hair Ball....Or something else?

Please take her to the vet asap! My cat had a "cough" that turned out to be pneumonia. We treated him for a hairball, and when that didn't work, the vet took x-rays, etc, %26amp; then we found out it was pneumonia. By that point, it was too late. Better safe than sorry....

Hair Ball....Or something else?

Try giving your only baby some hairball remedy found in stores every where and keep your cat in for the rest of his/her life and he/she will live to be over 20 years old without being exposed to fights and diseases that are flowing freely in the air outside. Make sure you cat is spayed/neutered and vaccinated to ensure a good health spoiled brat.

I am so sorry for the loss of your dear little kitty, Felix. I know how hard that is. There was a cat one of my daughters friends had that had a cough like that. It is still around. If you can't speak Thai well, perhaps you can bring a friend with you that can translate for you. You would probably have better piece of mind if you did bring your kitty in for a check up. Good luck.

Coughing can also be the first signs of asthma. It is very treatable ask your vet because doc will be able to hear the asthma quite clearly.

Hair Ball....Or something else?

Could be different reasons but the one that comes to mind is pneumonia since it has been going on for a month (one of our cats showed the same signs and that is what the vet ended up diagnosing him with).. One reason some cats start the coughing thing like that which often ends up turning into pneumonia (as in our case) is that they are trying to cough up roundworms that have migrated to their sinuses/etc.. Often this is in kittens under 9mths though and I would think yours would of coughed up some roundworms by now if that was the problem so chances are he has pneumonia, asthma/allergies, or kennel cough depending on what type of cough it is.. Either way all reasons can only be taking care of by going to a vet in the end..

Thanks for the tidbit, I love my meows :-)
